Thoughts on Blogging

It being the first blog of the year, I thought of reading up a bit on travel blogging. The aim was self-evaluation - to see how I would rate myself on what I had written last year on few of the many adventures trips that I and my friends had ventured into. Bloggers could be of two types: those who blog for fun and those who pursue blogging as a profession. There was no doubt; I belonged to the first kind. But rating myself on a scale of 10 would have merely discouraged me from pursuing this further. Hence, I dropped the idea of rating myself soon after I read this other blog on tips to newbie travel bloggers.  The most basic elements of blogging seemed off-track. As I read further, professional blogging seemed far-to-reach for now. It not just required more finesse and dedication, I think one gets to that level through practice and it is important to take the right baby-steps in that direction. I asked myself as to what is the purpose of blogging. The answer to that would define how I should proceed further.

Why do I wish to blog?

Definitely, to…
-          Record my travel journey across the globe.
-          Share my experiences with near-and-dear ones.
-          Reflect on every trip and see what I learned from people, culture, nature, traditions, etc.

and NOT…
-          To make money.
-          To attract viewers.
-          To publicize on social media.

Of course, it would be good if the blog benefits people beyond my friend-circle. But that would require me to be unique in my approach as there are thousands of travel blogs online, some very good ones too. So, for now, I will park that thought. God willing, if this initiative flies, some day, I might get interesting ideas to give professional look to my blog. I would definitely want to use this blogging experience to write a book in future that covers the travel destination that mesmerizes me the most.
Here are the key lessons that I should follow for my blog to be interesting.
-
Be informative: While the travelogues written in 2015 have been a mix of the factual details of the place and a personal account of the group’s experiences, the writing style needs to change a bit to lay greater emphasis on providing information about what-to-do, how-to-travel, where-to-stay/eat, and other such essential details. Of course, our personal experiences and fun moments can be woven as a story alongside. I should also write about the common mistakes that one should avoid, both based on my own experiences and from what I read on other blogs.

-
Collaborate with friends:  A lot of times, different people bring in different skills. Given my technology handicap, it always helps to have friends who can put stuff on the web and integrate the flow of the write-up with images. The blog that I started working on last year, was one such collaborated effort, which is yet to take the final shape before we make it live.

-  Photography is an important skill: While it is definitely boring to read plain text and photos are mandatory for any blog to be interesting, one should also click pictures specifically for the blog during the trip. A lot of times, a photo can be an effective medium in narrating the story and can give ideas of what to write about, in the respective blog.

-  Get your English right:  Basis my recent international interactions at work, I realized that the English that we write in India, is far from perfect. To add to the misery, English not being our mother tongue, it becomes hard to get the flow right when we translate our thoughts to words. While something might seem correct when you write it for the first time, a round of proofreading is must to ensure proper grammar and appropriate use of words. Creative flair is the second step; let us focus on the basics first. Let me now, proofread this article.

-  Let’s just start blogging: While I would never want to copy the content of my blogs from other sources, let me take the liberty of reproducing this part of the article from the blog that I mentioned above because of the impact of the message cannot be replicated in other words.

And finally, my bonus tip is to just start blogging. Stop worrying about design and what other people think and what other people are doing, just get started. It doesn’t matter if your blog isn’t perfect because the sooner you start, the sooner you’ll begin learning how to make it perfect."

“The secret to getting ahead is getting started.”  - Mark Twain

Thank You, Friend

Thank You, Friend

As the year draws to an end,
let me thank you, dear friend

it was indeed a memorable 2012
worthy enough for me to delve

many happy moments, u did bring
many a reason to dance and sing

few tough times, i did face
but, u always saved my grace
friends- they are many to count
but u are the best, no doubt

few did come and go
u stuck with me, though

our bond grows stronger by the day
though, a perfect union is still far away

my thoughts, u always read
what more does a friend need

all my questions, u resolve
my worries- in air they dissolve

i barely ask, but u always give
sufficient, to live and let live

blessed me with good health
with no dearth of wealth

love one and all, u did teach
right and wrong, u never preach

i am a slow student, i know
but u'll be proud, soon i'll show

jesus, krishna or ram
who cares for ur naam
i love u and u love me
what else, there needs to be

u r present in one and all
i see u in my every pal

let me thank you friend for everything
more happiness in this world, may u and i bring

Wish u a very happy and prosperous two-zero-one-three
from poverty, corruption and violence, let us set the world free

Oh GOD! Give me strength...

Oh GOD! Give me strength...
Not just to help myself, but
to HELP everyone around me...

Oh GOD! Give me strength..
Not just to be HAPPY myself, but
to bring a SMILE on everyone's face
to spread joy and happiness..
with KIND deeds, GENTLE words and PURE thoughts..

Oh GOD! Give me strength...
Not just to SUCCEED in every endeavour... but
to HUMBLE myself when I reach the top,
to lend a helping hand to those lagging behind...
with COMPASSION, EMPATHY and AFFECTION

Oh GOD! Give me strength...
Not just to be RIGHTEOUS, but
to be big-hearted, to forgive others' mistakes
to forget the bad moments and to look forward
with HOPE, FAITH and POSITIVITY

Oh GOD! Give me strength,,,
Not just to have BELIEF in myself, but
to INFUSE energy into others by showig FAITH in them
to TRUST everyone around me...
with utmost SINCERITY, without the slightest doubt

Oh GOD! Give me strength...
Not just to LOVE myself, my family and my friends, but
to LOVE those who are in need, those who have none but YOU,
to LOVE one and all... and
to HEAL those who are in pain, those who are suffering
with the universal medicine called LOVE...

I think it’s different this time...

Here's a poem that I wrote on friendship in September, 2011. It has been almost five years. Today being Friendship Day, it was apt to post this and kick-start my blogging journey. Back then, I had little confidence in my ability to write poems and articles. But my interactions with my friend - Varun motivated me to start and this was my first piece of work.

I think it’s different this time...
I can see, I can feel, I wish I could believe
It’s the past that holds me back, those thoughts hold me back
There’s a deep sense of longing, a deep sense of loss...
Lost you once, lost you twice
I am ready to pay any price,
To ensure there is no thrice
I think it’s different this time...

First, I lost him- my mistake;
Next, I lost her- her mistake
Now, I hope it is not You...
For, I have always had a very few...
While it was Give and only Give in his case,
Take and only Take in her case,
I see a balance here, there is both Give and Take
No act is a measured one, everything is so natural
That I think it’s different this time...

After two successive losses, it took me some time;
I tried hard to stay away from you
Two whole years... you came into my life so many times
Your promises were like the words inscribed on stone, I thought
Little did I know, you were a passing cloud as no rain you brought
None seemed to last long... Will it be the same with you?
I hope not.... I think it’s different this time...

This time, it’s you who is making the little compromises
I shall not let them go in vain
For I know, when I made such (futile) sacrifices
How difficult it was, to go through the pain
Let me know when I cross the line
When I take away something which is not mine
Something on which I have no right
Please forgive me... let us not fight

The world also thinks it’s different this time...
I don’t feel bad, I know it’s not a crime
I care not, of what people say,
It’s all a part of HIS beautiful play
If it is in our fate, to part; so be it, yet another time...
Yet, we shall be connected by thought
And there shall be no fear of being mocked
Although the time spent could be short, I know about you, a lot
To continue to tell my heart, it was different this time...

At times, I feel... darkness is better than blurred vision
At least it lets you have blind faith
The faith- that starts to fade slowly
When you desperately try to (fore)see in the dim light
Stop! Let me put a stop to these thoughts
Why should I try to connect the dots?
There is a ray of hope, that this time it is not a dope
I think it’s different this time...

It’s as true as GOD’s own word
It’s as pure as Mother’s love
It’s as beautiful as the Nature, itself
No envy, no greed, no negative feeling, whatsoever...
I THINK it’s different this time

But.....
Every single time I have thought so...
It always ended, leaving a scar behind...

However,
I shall cease not, to hope...
As hope shall translate into reality
The day will come soon...
When I shall THINK not, I shall KNOW, for sure, that
It is indeed different this time...
